20 May 2025 Good Food for the Holiday’s training: Chorley Sports School Partnership case study
Food Active has been offering the Good Food for the Holidays training for HAF providers since the inception of the programme nationally in 2021. The training has been delivered in over 10 localities, to over 600 providers, and aims to upskill staff and volunteers to ensure they offer healthy, nutritious and delicious food that meets the required school food standards. In this case study, we hear from Jen Milner, Camp Coordinator at Chorley Sports School Partnership, to share how attending the training has helped to improve their food offer.
How has attending the Good Food for the Holidays training impacted on your provision? What changes have you made to your food offer and food and nutrition activities as a result of attending the training?
Food Active’s training has completely transformed our partnership’s approach to the food served at the HAF clubs. Their training has not only elevated our food offerings but has also empowered our wider team to make informed decisions about nutrition.
Before the training, we had a solid understanding of the school food standards and providing good home cooked meals. However, the Food Active training took our approach to a new level. It equipped us with the knowledge to delve into the nutritional composition of each dish, enabling us to make informed choices about the ingredients we use and the meals we serve. This training really brought meals to life.
Parents are increasingly interested in the nutritional value of the food their children consume. By understanding the nutritional breakdown of our meals, we can provide parents with the information they need to make informed decisions about their children’s diet. This transparency has built trust between our club and the parents, fostering a strong partnership and promoting healthy eating habits.
The Food Active training has provided us with a solid foundation for future growth. We can now confidently train new staff members on food preparation, nutrition, and food safety. This ensures consistency in our food offerings and maintains the high standards we have set. Additionally, the training has inspired us to explore new and innovative ways to engage children in food education, such as cooking workshops and food preparation.
The HAF training from Food Active has been a transformative experience for our club. It has brought our food to life, empowering us to provide nutritious and delicious meals. By equipping our team with the knowledge and skills to understand nutrition, we can make a positive impact on the health and well-being of the children we serve. We are grateful for the support of Food Active and look forward to continuing our journey towards promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles.
