Autumn Statement: Food Active response

Autumn Statement: Food Active response

Today the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced his Autumn Statement in the Houses of Parliament. Our Programme Lead responds…

Our Programme Lead, Nicola Calder responded:

“Just one week ago we held our annual conference, bringing together just under 400 delegates to consider how to prioritise child healthy weight in the current cost of living crisis.

The Autumn statement announced today was an opportunity to address the challenges cited throughout the conference, including extending eligibility to free school meals and increasing the public health grant to support local authorities to deliver important services to promote healthy weight. Alas neither was addressed by the Chancellor.

Clearly today’s budget demonstrates there is a commitment to supporting some of our most vulnerable communities, however we urge the Government to go further to ensure children are not going to school hungry and local authorities are sufficiently resourced.”

In our Cost of Living and Healthy Weight Briefing Paper, we published a series of recommendations to national and local government to prioritise healthy weight and health disparities during the current crisis. To explore these full range of recommendations, follow the link below.
