20 Feb 2015 Burger King faces backlash from Liverpool health campaigners over home delivery service
Burger King has been told it’s “not welcome” to set up a home delivery service in Liverpool by health campaigners.
The fast food giant now delivers its menu to homes around eight regions in the UK as part of a trial.
Liverpool is not on the list or any other area of Merseyside. If the service is rolled out, as planned, burgers would be delivered to homes nationally.
But with obesity rates spiralling upwards in the city, Robin Ireland, chief executive of the Health Equalities Group, said: “The announcement of Burger King’s new delivery service comes at a time when obesity rates are steadily climbing across the UK, with nearly 40% of children and young people on Merseyside overweight or obese.
“An increasing body of research indicates that the easy availability of fast food influences the levels of obesity in a local area.
“Given Liverpool’s already high number of fast food outlets, this new delivery service is not something we would welcome to the city.”
News of the home delivery service being launched has been met with delight from fast food lovers. Some, commenting on social media site, Twitter, said they wanted to move to be in the catchment area.
But Mr Ireland said having burgers delivered to people’s doors makes it too convenient for people to eat too much.
Mr Ireland said: “This new service will make it easier than ever to fill yourself with calories without leaving your sofa.
“Sink your teeth into a double whopper, for example, and you’ll be consuming an enormous 894 calories!
“While Burger King’s announcement may be a cause of celebration for lovers of burgers, it should be met with dismay by those trying to avoid whopping waistlines.”
Burger King says their new service gives people the opportunity to enjoy their favourite great-tasting Burger King meals from the comfort of their own home at no extra cost.
Its trial in selected regions is being run over three months.
Customers in these areas are able to place orders over the phone or via Burger King’s delivery website everyday between the hours of 12-3pm and 6-10pm.
If successful, a wider national roll out will take place later in the year.
