14 Dec 2022 Delay to junk food marketing restrictions: Food Active response
Last week the Government announced they would be delaying the 9pm ban on TV & online junk food marketing until October 2025. Our Programme Lead responds…
Our Programme Lead, Nicola Calder responded:
‘We are disappointed to see a further delay to the HFSS food & drink marketing restrictions, pushing back the 9pm ban on TV & online junk food advertising until 2025. Delaying commitments made in the national obesity strategy will significantly impact on progress to improve child health.
These restrictions, if implemented in full, would have saved an estimated £76 billion over the next 25 years, and therefore the justification from Government that this provides an opportunity for businesses to adapt seems unsatisfactory in light of the challenges we face to protect child health. Delaying action will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in society and we are calling on Government, along with public health campaigners, to reconsider its’ position and prioritise child health.
