Organised jointly by the Local Government Association and the Association of Directors of Public Health, the conference aimed to consider proposals outlined in the second chapter of the Government’s Childhood obesity plan for action and the position of local authorities as leaders of a whole systems approach to tackling childhood obesity.
In our workshop, Food and Nutrition Lead Alex Holt and Director of Research Robin Ireland discussed the history and origins of the Local Government Declaration on Healthy Weight, which was officially launched in 2015. Now in 2019, we have 18 local authorities signed up to the Declaration, spreading from the North West to other regions of the country including Yorkshire and Humber and the South West.
We were also delighted to be joined by one of the adopted local authorities to provide some real-life insight into the journey from a councils point of view. Liverpool City Council adopted the Declaration back in November 2018, and Melisa Campbell kindly shared their experience and journey towards adopting, implementing a whole systems approach to tackling their obesity problems, celebrating the sign up and more importantly, keeping the momentum up in the months and years that follow.
