New ‘Look Who’s Cooking’ virtual cooking course launched for male carers in Liverpool

Food Active and Local Solutions are excited to launch ‘Look Who’s Cooking’, a virtual cooking course especially for male carers in Liverpool.

‘Look Who’s Cooking’ is a new virtual cooking course especially for male carers who are interested in gaining more confidence in the kitchen and unleashing their inner-chef.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many carers are continuing to shield for a range of reasons; age, underlying health conditions and health conditions of the person they care for. This has often resulted in a number of barriers for carers accessing healthy and nutritious food. Furthermore, the toll of caring impacts both physically and mentally – and the pandemic may have further exacerbated this. Stress, time constraints, lack of knowledge and/or motivation affects carers’ self-care. In terms of nutrition, carers report ‘less time to cook’ or ‘less interest in food’.

Food Active and Local Solutions have been successful in grant funding from the Liverpool City Region’s Metro Mayor’s #LCRCares Community Covid-19 Fund to deliver a project that supports male carers and the person they care for in accessing healthy food, whilst also supporting them to increase their confidence in the kitchen in preparing nutritious meals at home.

‘Look Who’s Cooking’ will provide the key ingredients and basic equipment needed to make healthy, low-cost meals at home, followed by a live virtual cook-a-long session with some useful tips and guidance on food skills and healthy eating. Carers will also have the opportunity to engage with other male carers, and be offered support in other areas of their live through the wide range of activities at the Liverpool Carers Centre (part of Local Solutions).

Each week will be themed with a different cuisine so attendees, including meals such as Mackerel Fishcakes, Chickpea and Cauliflower Curry and Risotto, and are designed to be simple, low cost and easy to make – meaning they can balance this with their caring responsibilities across the day.

All the ingredients and equipment needed to take part in the sessions will be delivered to straight to the carers’ door by friendly staff at the Carers Centre – so no need to head to the supermarket and also a chance for staff to check in to see if everything is okay at home.

Our thanks go to the #LCRCares Community Covid-19 Fund for making the project possible, which will support many male carers and their families during this difficult time.

The course is starting in w/c 7th December, every Tuesday at 11am-12pm and Wednesday 4-5pm for six weeks (there will be a 3 week break scheduled in for Christmas, and the course will restart mid-January).
