Food Active has published a new position statement: “Food as a safeguarding issue”.
Food is at the very heart of all aspects of care. However, the importance and key role of nutrition and positive food practices in care are currently underestimated and not effectively highlighted in social care policies.
Food Active has published a new position statement to frame the issue, both at a national and North West perspective. The aim was to provide a brief review of the evidence, initiatives or regulations currently in place to tackle the issue and our action on the matter.
Our long-term vision is to influence policy on the importance of considering food and nutrition as essential safeguarding issues for Children in Care. This would be a step change for the children’s social care sector as it displays new thinking. We know that timely, effective intervention and policy can make the world of difference to any child or young person but for children who are particularly vulnerable it is absolutely critical to their health outcomes, their life opportunities and their happiness and wellbeing.
The position statement is available to view and download by following the link below.
Our next step is to develop ‘Food in Care charter’. We would like to hear from leading organisations working with carers and children and young people in care who share the same values and drive for the same positive change in the children’s care sector. We are interested in working in partnership as we believe that by working together we can achieve more.
