Response: The Queen’s Speech confirms the Government’s commitment on tackling obesity

At the Queen’s Speech held today in the House of Lords, Her Majesty announced that the Government would put the NHS at the forefront of the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and, as part of that, introduce measures to tackle obesity.

Nicola Calder, Food Active Programme Lead said:

We strongly welcome today’s announcement in the Queen’s Speech outlining the Government’s commitment to put an end to the flurry of junk food marketing both online and TV.

This is a significant step in the right direction and clearly demonstrates the Government’s commitment to reducing obesity, creating a healthier food environment and ultimately prioritising the nation’s health over profits.

Huge congratulations to the public health community who have been working tirelessly to make the case for restrictions, not only in the past few months but decades too.
