Shared Learning at the Healthy Weight Declaration Regional South West Meeting

Food Active has been working with Public Health England South West to support local authorities in the South West to use the Local Authority Declaration on Healthy Weight to support a whole systems approach to addressing overweight and obesity.

A meeting held at Somerset County Council in Taunton on 13th May brought together public health staff from across the region to hear presentations from colleagues and to compare notes on their local authority’s progress in tackling healthy weight.

Richard Merrifield from Devon County Council spoke about developments in his area following a very successful event in Exeter last November. James Woolgar (seen presenting in the photo), travelled down from Liverpool City Council to share the process leading up to Liverpool adopting the Declaration in November 2018.

There was representation from Bath and NE Somerset Council, Bristol City Council, Cornwall Council, Somerset County Council, South Gloucestershire Council and Wiltshire Council in addition to Devon and Liverpool. Filiz Altinoluk-Davis (PHE) and Robin Ireland (Food Active) also gave presentations.

There are a number of events provisionally planned to take place this autumn (including from other councils such as Swindon who were unable to attend this meeting) which we will report back from as they take place.

In April, we published our first ever Healthy Weight Declaration Special Edition Bulletin that featured a number of pieces from public health local authority staff who are currently in the process of adopting the Healthy Weight Declaration across England – including Richard Merrifield from Devon County Council, who discussed Devon’s journey towards adoption thus far. You can access both the special edition bulletin and Richard’s guest article by following the links below.
