St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School is the first school to sign up to the Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future, which aims to support the actions Leeds City Council has set out in its Declaration on Healthy Weight.
Launched in 2015, the Declaration was developed by Food Active, which is part of the Health Equalities Group and has now been adopted by tens of councils across the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, North East and South West England. The Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future, co-developed with the Health and Wellbeing Service at Leeds City Council, expands on this work by helping to engage with schools across local areas to support a whole systems approach to promoting healthy weight.
Leeds City Council signed the Declaration back in February 2018, adopting a set of commitments to support and enable a system-wide approach to healthy weight across Council departments and partners.
Today, St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School are holding a launch event inviting parents, pupils, local councillors and beyond to celebrate the launch of the Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future. The event will also involve a range of health and wellbeing activities for families, including healthy tasters from the school’s delicious menu.
As part of its pledge, the school will also act as a champion for its staff, pupils and parents, as well as people in the wider community and include a wide range of actions that support healthier food options in school, promote active travel and the daily mile, promote access to fresh drinking water and many more.
Three schools across the city have been piloting the Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future since May 2021, and today we are delighted that one of the schools are officially launching their pledge after months of hard work planning and preparing the resource.
“We’re delighted to pledge our support for the Council’s Declaration on Healthy Weight and help champion a healthy lifestyle. We take the health and wellbeing of everyone connected with St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School very seriously and there is plenty of support available for all our staff, pupils and parents.
As part of our pledge, we’ll promote healthy weight, eating well and being more active within the school whenever we can. Our first key focus after signing the pledge will be implementing a healthier packed lunch policy, and supporting families with information and resources to ensure the contents of their children’s packed lunch is healthy and nutritious.”
“We’re pleased to see St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School sign up to the Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future.
The health and wellbeing of residents across Leeds City Council is something we care greatly about and providing support is going to be particularly valuable as we all continue to cope with the effects of COVID-19.
Our Declaration on Healthy Weight is a great way for organisations to help us spread the word about healthy weight, eating well and being more active to their staff, partners and the wider community, and we are delighted to have the support of St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School.”
“Congratulations to St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School for becoming the first school in the country to adopt the Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future.
We all know how difficult it is to make the right choices when we are surrounded by unhealthy food, the wrong advertising messages and when sugary drinks are cheaper than water. I am delighted that St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School is doing everything they can to help their staff, pupils and parents eat healthier.
We are very grateful to St Bartholomew’s for trailing the Pledge and being so involved in the pilot from the off. They have trailblazed the way for other schools and we are excited to officially launch the Pledge later in the year. ”
The Pledge for a Healthy and Active Future is currently undergoing a pilot phase. Food Active and the Health and Wellbeing Service at Leeds City Council will be officially launching the resource in the summer.
