Campaigns and Interventions:
#GetsHangry – a Toolkit for Engaging Young People in Social Action
The #GetsHangry project was formed from a partnership between the Healthier Place, Healthier Future programme, Burnley Youth Theatre, the Civic Arts Centre and Social Sense. The #GetsHangry projects in Burnley and Hyndburn ran between May and July 2021. This partnership highlights how creative organisations can work with public health programmes to run consultations with communities. Further, this allowed the development of creative, engaging, and unique projects in the areas of Burnley and Hyndburn – the #GetsHangry campaigns.
We documented the campaigns through a toolkit which you can download for free now. The toolkit demonstrates two different approaches to engaging young people on the topics of food, healthy eating and (food) poverty. Both groups worked creatively to develop visual representations of their projects, with the Hyndburn group designing a mural and the Burnley group a protest performance, leading to the #GetsHangry social action campaign.
Max’s Not So Sweet Dream – Children’s Book and Colouring Pages
The Healthier Place, Healthier Future project has been looking at different ways to engage younger people in eating healthy and looking after teeth. We put out an open call to Salford University graphic design students on a children’s book to illustrate a children’s book. We worked with (now graduated) illustrator Millie Whitehouse to design a book on healthy eating and teeth brushing for children aged five to nine years.
Max’s Not So Sweet Dream takes you on an imaginary tale of a young boy who dreams of a sugar-filled fantasy, which quickly begins to turn sour. After consultation with experts (aka, parents) on the storyline and illustrations used throughout the book, we are proud to launch Max’s Not So Sweet Dream. We have also developed two colouring pages to keep little ones busy. Download and enjoy below!
The Creative Consultation Toolkit
This toolkit is presented as a ‘library’ of the creative consultation activities facilitated as part of the Pennine Lancashire Childhood Obesity Trailblazer: Healthier Place, Healthier Future. In this toolkit, you can find a ‘how-to’ guide of the various tried and tested sessions delivered with different members of the public. Face-to-face creative consultation was carried out across a number of locations in Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Ribble Valley and Hyndburn.
This toolkit is the complete ‘how-to’ and learnings to help you run engaging consultation to gather information around food environments. Interested? Download below.
The Great Big Pan Challenge Toolkit
The Great Big Pan Challenge was generated by a group of partners across Blackburn with Darwen during the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown of Spring 2020. The challenge was a cooking competition that aimed to engage members of the Blackburn and Darwen communities in a conversation about food and food insecurity.
This toolkit is the complete ‘how-to’ and learnings to help you run your own Great Big Pan Challenge. Interested? Download below.
